The Zugspitze – a mountain that towers above all others in Germany.
A massive mountain rises 2,962 meters high and crowns the German Alpine panorama on the border with Austria. From its peak, the view extends over 400 mountains into our neighboring countries. Deep gorges surround this colossus; its flanks tell stories from millions of years.
The Zugspitze peak rises in the Wetterstein Mountains southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Eternal ice covers parts of the plateau; up there, scientists are researching environmental phenomena in the Schneefernerhaus. The air is icy - even in midsummer, temperatures fall below zero; snowflakes dance for twelve months.
On August 27, 1820, a brave group conquered the summit for the first time. The Bavarian lieutenant Josef Naus climbed with his assistant Maier and mountain guide Johann Georg Tauschl from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via the Reintalweg - a route that still attracts mountaineers today.
A cog railway has been winding its way up the mountain since 1930, opening up the mountain massif to visitors of all kinds. Today, three routes lead to the top: the cog railway over the Eibsee to the Zugspitzplatt; a gondola from Ehrwald in Austria; the cable car with its record-breaking support swings freely through the air.
The military used the summit as a weather station during World War II. In 1949, politicians drew new borders between Germany and Austria here. Spirits are said to guard a treasure in the depths of the mountain - such stories make the giant even more mysterious.
The mountain heights invite you to a variety of activities: skiers glide over the slopes; climbers conquer steep walls on the Stopselzieher or in the Höllental; hikers marvel at the Alpine world in all directions from the viewing platform. Mountain huts invite you to stop for a break.
A pilot accompanies you through the skies and tells you exciting stories about the region below you.
The sightseeing flight makes a wonderful gift; it will give you a day full of highlights. The helicopter takes off on weekends or during the week if you wish and takes you up to the Zugspitze.
The sky opens up new perspectives on the majestic Alps.
The spirit of adventure awakens at the sight of the rugged rocks; the wide view takes everyone's breath away.
The Zugspitze towers above as a landmark and tells the story of mountaineers from centuries past. Anyone who has ever stood at the top - whether on skis, on foot or by helicopter - takes home deep impressions.
